The Community Center in Waukegan is a place where families connect with others in their community for information, activities, and support. The Community Center works to reduce isolation, support families, and build community. We work in promoting wellness, enhancing literacy and learning, advocacy, and providing social services resources. Volunteering needs include instructors to teach English-as-Second Language classes, Citizenship classes, Computer classes, after-school homework help, and perform general office tasks. Additionally, volunteers are able to assist with tax preparation services in partnership with Ladder Up during tax season. We encourage anyone interested in volunteering to contact us.

El Nino Rey: Kathleen O'Connor ocfam6@att.net 847-528-5873 El Niño Rey (www.elninorey.org) organizes dental missions to a poverty stricken area in central Mexico. Over the past 10 years, many North Shore dentists, hygienists, and other volunteers have given their time and talents to provide free dental care to the very poor. They also give scholarships to over 900 kids each year in order to help them stay in school longer and hopefully break the cycle of poverty.
Nicaragua Ministry: Marjorie Conley-Gaitan marjorieconley@aol.comhttp://sharinginnicaragua@gmail.com The Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus are creating a soup kitchen in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, an impoverished port town located in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region of the county. This soup kitchen is designed to feed an initial group of around 130 children and some elderly people one meal a day, five days a week. The International Sharing Ministry at St. Joseph's has committed to raising funds for the acquisition of the necessary eqyipment and installation costs for the soup kitchen's on-going daily operation.
