In the Second Book of Kings, we encounter a man named Naaman, who is wealthy and powerful, but also suffers from leprosy that threatens his life. We hear that “the Lord brought victory to Aram” through Naaman, even though he was an enemy of Israel. It’s amazing that, despite hearing that God worked through him, it is only later that Naaman comes to discover in a personal way his relationship with the God of Israel. Despite his outward success, he is lacking the most important thing — a relationship with the Lord. God actively loves us even though we only passively respond, or fight him, or maybe don’t respond at all. God is all the while waiting for us to discover his personal love, deeper than mere head knowledge that there is a God “out there” somewhere, a nameless, impersonal force. Reflect on a moment in your life when faith was made personal for you. Ask God to help you develop a deeper, more personal faith with him.
