It is with a heavy heart that I share this letter. In reviewing the responses to the Synod question “What about the Church breaks your heart?”, I learned that the sexual abuse crisis has both directly and indirectly affected some parishioners. It breaks my heart to hear of this. I am grateful to those who shared their experience and pain. In response, the Synod team and I contacted the Archdiocese and have been in communication with them. The Synod responses did not include the timing of the abuse nor the identity of victims or perpetrators. Because of this, the Archdiocese shared resources with me and encouraged survivors to come forward and receive the help and healing they deserve. If you wish to report abuse by clergy, an employee, or a volunteer of the Archdiocese of Chicago, or would like to be connected with resources for healing, please contact the Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Assistance Ministry at 312-534-8256. Visit https://protect.archchicago.org/offices-and-services/office-of-assistance-ministry for more information.
In addition, I encourage all to report allegations concerning the abuse and/or neglect of minors to the DCFS Hotline (1.800.25.ABUSE) and/or the local police department.
I know of no issues or allegations with current clergy, staff, or volunteers. The health and safety of our community is very important to me. Please know we at St. Joseph Catholic Church and School follow all Archdiocese of Chicago requirements and guidelines for our priests, staff, and volunteers. All priests, staff, and volunteers are subjected to background checks and are required to undergo safe environment training and to adhere to all other requirements set forth by the Archdiocese of Chicago. For more on these requirements, click here: https://protect.archchicago.org/offices-and-services/safe-environment-office. Parishioners who have questions or concerns may contact the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for the Protection of Children and Youth at 312.534.5388. They are prepared to answer your questions.
I felt it was important to share this information with the community before any other communications about the Synod. My top priority is the healing, both spiritually and mentally, of survivors and their families. I am praying for you, as your pastor, with a broken heart. Please pray for your family of faith at St. Joseph as well. We are on this journey together.
