As I return from my trip to Rome, I am reflecting on the incredible experience of being part of the Jubilee year, a time of forgiveness, reconciliation, and renewal. A Jubilee year in the Catholic Church is a special time to deepen our relationship with God, one another, and all of creation. Traditionally, these years occur every 25 years, and this year’s theme, "Pilgrims of Hope," is inspired by St. Paul's words in Romans 5:5: "Hope does not disappoint."
The 2025 Jubilee year began on December 24, 2024, when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, and it will end on January 6, 2026, when the Holy Door is closed. This year is a time for us to grow closer to God, to renew our hearts and our faith, and to experience His abundant mercy.
As we reflect on this special year, we are reminded of the power of God’s forgiveness. When we sin, God offers us His mercy through the sacrament of Reconciliation. But even after our sins are forgiven, there are still spiritual consequences—wounds that need healing. This is where the concept of indulgence comes in: It is a way to remove the punishment for sins that have already been forgiven, bringing us healing and restoration on a spiritual level.
To receive the plenary Indulgence during the Jubilee year, there are a few conditions to meet: - Go to Confession - Receive Communion - Pray for the Holy Father and his intentions
The Jubilee year is all about God’s desire to restore and deepen our relationship with Him. He wants to fill us with His very life and love, drawing us closer to Him by His grace.
Holy Father Pope Francis encourages us to go on a pilgrimage to return to our spiritual home, specifically Rome. But if you are not sure you have any plans for a pilgrimage to Rome, maybe you can arrange something on a local level. See local pilgrimage sites here.
During my time in Rome, I had the privilege of entering the Holy Door at the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. This powerful experience deepened my appreciation of what this Jubilee year is all about, the hope of restoration and renewal. I invite you to join me in embracing this Jubilee year, allowing it to be a time of grace and transformation in your own life.
